The burden of 21 murders lies squarely upon our shoulders.
On all of us.
We deserve to feel sick about this. We deserve to feel horrified. And we deserve the shame. All of us as a nation – not just the Democrats, and not just the Republicans in office- are to blame.
It’s not just one political party at fault. It’s the entire country.
It was either our complacency over the years that allowed those intent on destroying America to begin burning it down, or our refusal now to acknowledge the true culprit behind these tragedies.
Guns are not the cause of these killings. They are not the weapons. They are the tools.
The major mental health crisis in this country is the first true culprit. And until we address it, it won’t matter how many guns are taken away or how many constitutionally protected rights are removed from American citizens – mental illness will find different tools to kill.
Evil will adapt.
Mental illness is being weaponized, and people are dying as a result.
Let’s look at some basic statistics. You can easily research this further on your own.
A 2020 study by the Journal of the Medical Association (JAMA) points to dramatic increases in a range of mental health issues, even just at the beginning of the pandemic. The Tennyson Center For Children shared the JAMA study in a 2020 article, and correctly predicted the mental health crisis will not only continue to escalate throughout lockdowns and restrictions and mandates, but will last well into the future.
The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) offers the following information:
1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year
1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year
1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year
50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24
Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34
Americans must come together as a community to de-stigmatize mental health, to train leaders in youth clubs, schools, workplaces, and local resources in areas addressing mental health, and to collectively support one another in order to proactively reduce the number of people for whom mental health struggles become overwhelming.
We must ensure access to skilled treatment is accessible for all Americans, and we absolutely must stop padding the pockets of the Big Pharm companies by pushing prescription medicine as the Holy Grail of mental illness treatment.
Additional steps we can take to protect both our mental and physical health include :
We must acknowledge that America’s moral compass has been almost entirely dismantled. Americans have been pushed, pressured, and manipulated into choosing sides against one another. We have been encouraged and even celebrated for mocking one another’s beliefs, for hurling hateful insults online, and in many instances, for burning businesses down and assaulting police officers.
We have been baited into race wars, we have been gaslighted on gender identities, we have removed faith from everything, and we have dehumanized infants in the womb.
And those are just the highlights.
So it is no wonder that tragedies continue to happen. We have created a breeding ground for Evil to blossom. And as long as its root causes continue to flourish, courageous teachers will continue to be the only thing standing between our precious youth and the morally bankrupt, mentally ill human beings doing Evil’s bidding.
