An 18-year-old girl is suing a hospital system whose doctors performed an elective double mastectomy on her when she was just 13 years old. Layla Jane and her parents now regret the course of action they began when Layla was just 12 years old. That, they say, is shortly after Layla believed she was in fact a male. Layla has since detransitioned.
Young Layla, like so many children, experienced a host of mental health issues concerning her identity. According to her attorney, some of those issues include anxiety, depression, pubertal struggles, body dysmorphia, and serious self-image concerns.
Layla’s lawsuit asserts that doctors at the Kaiser Permanente hospital system failed to perform an adequate evaluation and treatment of Layla’s extensive mental health comorbidities. Instead, they ushered her down the path of transitioning.
A letter from Layla’s attorney states this path was pushed upon Layla and her family with “intentional fraud and concealment.” The doctors, Layla’s parents assert, told them their daughter would likely kill herself unless they transitioned her, and even asked them which they prefer- “a live son or a dead daughter.”
Layla describes the hormone treatments and puberty blockers as “torture” and calls it “mind-boggling” that a doctor would sign off on a double mastectomy for her when she had only just started eighth grade and had yet to even take a sex-ed class.

The family is suing for financial damages incurred as a result of health issues Layla suffers from the five-year transition process. Those health issues include “ permanent irreversible mutilation, an induced state of endocrine disease, an increased risk of being infertile, and will never be able to breastfeed a child.”
Lily is one of two plaintiffs currently suing this hospital for being coerced into transitioning as a child. Her attorneys are also representing Chloe Cole, who was just 15 when she underwent a double mastectomy.
Kaiser is standing by its doctors, issuing a statement that says its doctors “practice compassionate, evidence-based medicine founded on sound research and best medical practices.”
“When adolescent patients, with parental support, seek gender-affirming care, the patient’s care team carefully evaluates their treatment options,” according to Marc Brown, the Kaiser spokesman. “The care decisions always rest with the patient and their parents, and, in every case, we respect the patients and their families’ informed decisions about their personal health.”
*Note* We here at the Great American Syndicate, stand against the movement to sexualize and push children into transitioning, as well as the negative impacts of forcing this upon society as a whole. We do not, however, believe all transgender people should be perceived as a threat, nor treated unkindly. Rather, they should be treated with compassion as they experience severe mental health distress. We will remove all comments wishing harm upon anyone.*
