Many Americans know of LT. Michael P. Murphy from the movie that documented his noble sacrifice, “Lone Survivor”.

The opening of the LT Michael P. Murphy SEAL Museum in West Sayville County was a star-studded affair with VIP military officers, politicians, and celebrities in attendance. President Bush addressed the crowd via a video message and stated the following:

From their earliest days in World War II, Navy special warfare forces have occupied a special place in American military history. This honored site in West Sayville will pay tribute to the enduring accomplishments of all of them, including Michael Murphy…. I’m pleased that his values, his sacrifice, and his story will live here forever.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy died in combat 17 years ago when he and his fellow SEALs were ambushed behind enemy lines.

When his team was pinned down, Murphy moved out into the open to gain a better position to transmit a call and get help for his men. Because of his sacrifice, Marcus Luttrell survived and was in attendance at the opening ceremony.

Luttrell believes “Murph” would have been humbled by this commemoration and made comments on how the museum will serve to inspire young people to a greater purpose:

Kids have to find their guidance somewhere. What are you going to put in front of them? Hopefully, it’s something like this.

Inside the museum, a picture of Lt. Michael Murphy is framed alongside 314 other Navy SEALs who lost their lives in the line of duty. Thus, this museum serves as an educational facility as well as a memorial to the best among us who were willing to sacrifice their lives abroad for American freedom at home.

As an educational facility, the museum utilizes state-of-the-art exhibits, films, videos, and opportunities to interact with the SEAL community. The primary theme communicated by these attractions is “service above self,” an ethos that Lt. Michael Murphy lived by.

The museum tracks the entire history of the Navy SEALs, dating back to the 1950s when the unit was known as the Frogmen. Through its displays, the public can learn about Navy SEAL operations in the Korean War, the Vietnam conflict, and all the way up to SEAL Team Six’s successful termination of Osama Bin Laden.

Another feature of the museum is that it serves as the new home for the Lt. Michael Murphy Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps, a national youth leadership development program. This program is modeled after the Navy’s professional development system and teaches its young members skills in naval disciplines and leadership.

Lt. Michael P. Murphy was an exemplary Navy SEAL that all Americans should respect and honor. SEAL veterans hope that, through this museum, Murphy’s ideals and character will live on and inspire a new generation of American heroes.
