There is a storm surrounding our Supreme Court’s landmark decision overturning Roe v Wade. In the midst of this storm, we have Americans celebrating this victory. We also have Americans denouncing this decision as the greatest tragedy our country has ever experienced.

And in between the noise, we have other Americans stepping forward to lead by example.

University of Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh is one of those leaders.

Professionally, Harbaugh leads a college football team. But his leadership does not begin and end on the field. Harbaugh goes the extra mile to support the people in his circle. He also believes in the sanctity of life. He’s unapologetic about his beliefs, openly stating that abortion “is the most horrendous thing,” when asked about this topic at a recent press conference.

Harbaugh, who once took his team on a trip to the Vatican, stated that it’s his faith and science driving his beliefs and that he believes in “courage to let the unborn be born.”

Contrary to popular belief, many states still champion abortion on demand. Many others provide abortion with certain restrictions, and Americans by and large retain the ability to terminate their infants in the womb – even if they may now have to inconvenience themselves to do so.

It’s true that our foster care system is overwhelmed. Ditto for social services. This, however, is not a justification for abortion as far as Harbaugh is concerned. In fact, the coach took his convictions one step further.

He and his wife, he says, will go all the way to support a baby’s right to life. He told his team and his staff the following:

Let that unborn child be born, and if at that time, you don’t feel like you can care for it, you don’t have the means or the wherewithal, then Sarah and I will take that baby.

He made it a point to further clarify this offer to the media, so his point was perfectly clear.

Any player on our team, any female staff member or any staff member or anybody in our family or our extended family … that doesn’t feel like after they have a baby they can take care of it, we got a big house…We’ll raise that baby.

Coach Harbaugh and his wife prove that there are options other than abortion- how many others are out there like them, who will open their hearts and homes for other unwanted babies?

How many overwhelmed women are out there who would love to know there is help and hope for their baby, even if that means adoption? How many women are coerced into abortions they don’t want?

We’ll see if anyone takes the coach up on his offer. In the meantime, he’s helped spark new conversations on an old topic..
