Man Who Mows Lawns For Veterans And The Elderly Is Now Delivering Free Meals, Supplies And Big Smiles
Many people in Alabama have to stay at home right now because of the coronavirus pandemic. But that is not stopping Rodney Smith Jr. from helping his community when he’s needed most.
Not only has Rodney been mowing for the elderly, disabled, single mothers and veterans, free of charge, Rodney is now delivering food and supplies as well for those who need to stay home during the Coronavirus health crisis.
Rodney Smith Jr. is starting to mow lawns again in Huntsville because spring is here and the grass is growing.
Only now, due to the current circumstances we are all in, Rodney is also delivering meals and groceries to those who can’t get out, according to a story on It’s a Southern Thing.
Smith is delivering donated supplies such as hand sanitizer, toilet paper and fresh fruit.
“People have been donating money for hand sanitizer, fresh fruit, water, toilet paper and other items for those who can’t get outside of their house,” Smith said. “Some have met with me to give me the items.”
On Monday, he delivered some 30 meals prepared by Beacon Hill Worship Center in Madison.
“I mow lawns, drop (food and supplies) off and go,” he said in a phone interview.
But he doesn’t leave before taking a quick selfie with his clients as they peek out at their newly trimmed lawns. He also posts before-and-after photos of their yards to show the difference.
Rodney Smith Jr has dedicated himself to mowing lawns for free in all 50 states since 2015, when he was a student at Alabama A&M University.
In 2016, Smith founded a lawn care nonprofit, Raising Men Lawn Care Service, in his hometown of Huntsville, Alabama. Raising Men Lawn Care Service helps young people give back to their communities.
He also started a Nationwide challenged that currently has, 710 boys and girls who have signed up for his “50 Yard Challenge.”
Every kid is challenged to move 10 lawns to earn a T-Shirt and after they move 50 lawns they get their own lawn mower, weed waker, and leaf blower.
The kids in the program visit veterans, the disabled, the elderly, single moms and anyone who needs help doing yard work. They mow people’s lawns, shovel show, rake leaves and more — free of charge. Source: From Press
Rodney was planning to start his ninth “50 States, 50 Yards” tour, in which he mows his way to all 50 states, in April, but he has postponed the trip because of the coronavirus threat.
